Two particular points of interest on
this piece are the rippled cherry, and the way the drawer handles
are formed.
As usual, we have used solid wood throughout, and
were lucky enough some years ago to find a log of rippled English
cherry. English cherry is a lovely material, being fine-textured,
quite hard and capable of an excellent finish. The real beauty here though is the ripple - very rare
indeed to this extent in cherry. The above photo does not do it justice,
but to get some idea look at borders of this web page - they were scanned directly from
a piece of wood that went into this piece.
The drawer handles are carved into the drawer
fronts, which started life considerably thicker than they are now. The result is quite subtle, but extremely tactile.
