MonkeyWiki: External Link Options

As from version 1.05, Monkey Wiki can be configured to render external links in two different ways:

NUMBERED_OUTLINKS = 0 means that links will be dispayed as the full URL, just as they were before version 1.05

NUMBERED_OUTLINKS = 1 means that each link will appear as a number enclosed in square brackets, rather like the references to footnotes in a document. The numbers will be automatically sequential within any one page.

This optional change was made for a site whose external links involved very long, complex URLs involving query strings, which made the readablity of the text very poor. However, it may have a wider appeal too, having the following virtues:

It improves readability in general
It de-emphasises the external links in favour of the internal links, which are more at the heart of a wiki
It reads more like a piece of text with footnotes, or references
